How Do I Get a Coach?

Pre-selected PES students are invited to join the program. If you're a PES student, check your U of M email to see if you've been pre-selected. If you have, submit the brief application, and a staff member will be in touch with you shortly!

Is Coaching the Same as Counseling?

Coaching and counseling are not the same.

Coaching will help you determine and achieve your goals using powerful questions that offer clarity and self-discovery. The coaching relationship is focused on the future and will allow you to self-identify action steps for reaching your goals.

Counseling tends to focus more on emotional and psychological challenges and helps students recognize and effectively manage mental health diagnoses such as anxiety, depression, and more. Students seeking counseling are encouraged to contact Student Counseling Services or Boynton Mental Health.

Is Coaching the Same as Academic Advising?

While many academic advisors on campus have training in coaching and counseling skills, academic advising serves different purposes. Academic advisors offer support in designing, developing, and implementing individual academic plans that meet degree requirements.

Coaching is a mentoring approach designed to provide individualized support with various issues that impact college life.

Can I Join After My First Year?

No, not at this time. Students invited to the program are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible!

Can I Pick My Coach?

No, not at this time. Student Success Coaching is a new initiative, and our team is too small to allow for this right now. That said, all of the coaches are excellent, and you'll get along just great!

Are the Coaches Students or Professionals?

Our Success Coaches are full-time professional staff who have been where you are and have extensive training and experience in working with college students just like you. They have graduated from college and completed graduate school as well.

Is This Only for PES Students?

Yes, this is only for pre-selected PES students at this time. If you're a PES student, check your U of M email to see if you've been pre-selected. If you have, submit the brief application, and a staff member will be in touch with you shortly!
